My Special Brahmatal Trek – 2020!

After almost 10 months and a massive lockdown (in my head!), I was finally able to start with this special blog again. The lockdown put me in a very dark space – something I had never imagined could happen, it felt like my world had started closing down on me and I am sure it was difficult for a lot of us! But yes, almost half a year later, I am back in THE ZONE! Preparing for another trek and of course, writing about one too! ❤

The great Himalayan Range

Why is this trek so special? It was my FIRST solo trip, EVER! All by myself! I couldn’t believe how much I learned from this trip.

2020 was supposed to be MY YEAR! After a lot of distress in my personal life, this was going to be the well I was waiting to jump into! Waiting for friends wasn’t an option, my partner in crime – Kritika wasn’t here and none of my other friends are remotely interested in the adventures of my liking! 🤪

Mumbai to Rishikesh – a fun 20 hour journey, all in the best company of all – ME (and Trevor Noah)!

Flights have never been my first preference, not only because they’re boring, but also because the journey isn’t as eco-friendly as the train. I’ve always been a big fan of travelling by train – the journey, the people, the stories you get to live in a train are nothing compared to a flight!

I was up and about, looking like the perfect backpacker! I think there is always an adrenaline rush when you’re about to catch a train, or is it just me? I reached the Bandra Terminus Station and for a CHANGE I arrived earlier than the train did! I had booked my seat in the upper side berth of the Rajdhani Express’ 3 tier AC coach. I love the privacy you get in a side berth! No sooner did the train journey begin, a group of Punjabi aunties had taken over the cabin and I LOVED IT! They were so lively, so sweet and most of all – SO FUNNY! They were gossiping about so many fun things, it made me laugh and enjoy the train journey even more! It felt like an all women’s cabin – what better company could I have asked for? (Zero creeps!)

One of the best decisions I ever made was to carry Trevor Noah’s – ‘Born a Crime’ along. I have not laughed harder! I’m sure the other women in the train thought I’m a bit cuckoo in the head for laughing out loud, just so randomly! I loved the book so much – so yes – a special thank you to Trevor Noah – one of my favorite comedians and talk show hosts too! To make things even special, I got to know that it was Trevor’s birthday the day I decided to start his book! ❤

I reached Delhi at around 8:30 AM and walked straight to the closest metro station, funnily, made a friend while booking my metro ticket and we took a metro to Kashmiri Gate. She was also travelling to Rishikesh, but she waited back for another friend, while I took the next bus that was leaving for Rishikesh – I didn’t want to waste a minute more!

After an 8 hour long road journey (usually it takes about 6 hours!), my bus finally arrived at the Rishikesh bus station and there it was – the best feeling in the world! I stepped out of the bus, blood rushing to my cheeks and a BIG smile on my face! I started looking for an autorickshaw to get to Zostel (which I consider my second home by now!), when a very sweet German lady joined me and said, “Let’s catch the rickshaw from the main junction, it will be cheaper!” We walked together for a while and she was telling me about her beautiful journey that she had been travelling for the last couple of months. She had been travelling. She had just arrived from Nepal and was travelling around India the last few months. She said she was in love with Rishikesh (I don’t blame her!) and that was going to be spending at least 2 months here!

I’ve heard so many stories on this particular trip that I couldn’t even try and write them all down! I met so many travelers and heard such beautiful stories and their experiences with this beautiful country and their many life changing experiences – it only made me happier!

It was so cold, we were freezing in the open rickshaw! The winds were hitting my face so sharply that I had to cover my face and ears instantly! Finally we reached the beginning of Tapovan but the road was under renovation half way through. We parted our ways and I walked to Zostel, but the walk just brought more and more memories! It was Shivratri – Rishikesh was glowing! Lakshman and Ram Jhula were lit up more beautifully than usual.

Zuby – you will be missed

It was already 8pm by the time I got to my dorm. Now, the one thing I was worried about was – I had to wash my hair on time! I was not going to wash it for the next 7 days! Long hair problems, I tell you! 🤭 The ladies would understand the struggle!  After doing the NEEDFUL, I headed over to the Zostel terrace – a place of a billion memories! I sat down for dinner – Aloo paratha with the famous ginger lemon tea! I wasn’t expecting to meet Shashi and was pleasantly surprised to see him there! I met his darling Zuby as well and we had a great chat too! Unfortunately, just like a lot of terrible things that happened in 2020, we lost Zuby this year 😦 Nevertheless, her memories are always going to float in Zostel, Rishikesh. She was so very loved by everyone who has visited Zostel! Rest in Peace, Zuby.

Day 1 – Rishikesh to Lohajung – A REALLLLLLY LONG JOURNEY!

I got ready and left my room at around 5:30 AM and waited for the group to assemble outside Zostel. I met my favourite doggies too who sat and cuddled with me till everyone gathered. As soon as I went to the checkout, I met this sweet girl just sitting on the couch – My to-be roomie – Sanidya, an Indo-Australian, super talented girl! We connected almost instantly! I also met this gorgeous man, again, from Australia – Gregory and a cute young couple from Canada. All of us just came together and decided to travel together from Rishikesh to Lohajung. We met a few others and hopped into our jeep to start the exciting, and extremely long journey!

Our first break – Devprayag
Greg! (PC: Abhijeet Shinde)

Sanidya, Gregory, Lianne, Timothy and me were in the jeep and they were absolutely FANTASTIC company! So many more stories, but the best of the ones were from – none other than – GREG! He is one of the MOST inspiring people I have ever met in my life and I don’t think I’ll meet anyone like him, ever! Greg was 69 with a soul and fitness of a 30 year old! Exactly! A professional scuba diver and instructor, a swimming coach and definitely an adrenaline junkie to have attempted a high altitude Himalayan Trek! We also connected so much more because Greg had a little poodle named Zoe! I can keep going on about Greg and my words will never do any justice till you meet this man in person. It was such an honour to have trekked with him.

We stopped for a quick lunch at around 4 PM where I went and introduced myself to the rest of the group (I’m an excited soul like that!) We were driving alongside the gorgeous River Ganga for a very long time, till she disappeared behind the mountains of Uttarakhand. Travelling can be so exhausting, especially one with so many traffic breaks! The roads of Uttarakhand are always under repair because of some or the other damage because of small landslides here and there. After a LONG LONG LONG 14 hour journey, we finally jumped out of our vehicles at the Lohajung Base Camp at 7,600 feet (2,317 M).

It was already freezing cold! We rushed into our rooms to just freshen up a bit before dinner. Hot dinner was served and the routine checks began. We met our amazing and over enthusiastic trek leader – Deep Thakkar! He was so polite and sweet, who knew we were in for a lotof fun with this enthu cutlet!

The thing about treks that astounds me the most is how quickly people connect with each other. Why? Is it because of the lack of technology – being off the grid? Is it the journey? Is it the mountains? Is it the experience that we are all about to share? I just don’t know -nut the extrovert in me absolutely LOVES it!

Day 2 – Lohajung to Bekaltal (7,600 feet to 9,885 feet) / (2,317 m to 3013 m)

We woke up to the morning light breaking on the snow white peaks in front of our guest house. To watch the first break of light hitting the peaks and slowly making them glow and shine is surreal. We were all standing on the balcony of our guest house, sipping on our morning cup of chai!

All of us gathered for breakfast at around 7:30 AM and that’s when we officially got introduced to the group. This was a lovely mix of people – the young, the experienced, the shy, the over enthusiastic, the extra fit (Ravi!) and many more! The personalities were absolutely kick ass – one better than the other! There were 20 of us and then an additional 3 trek leaders and guides.

Chilling with the Himalayan dogs (PC: Lianne)

Shortly after breakfast and briefing, we started our hike to the mountains! About 30 minutes into the trek the weather started becoming cloudier and the sun started shying away from us. It started drizzling a bit and very soon we were already seeing patches of snow around us. After going through super green patches, we reached an open space where we were greeted by 3-4 gorgeous dogs! It was a beautiful spot to sit and relax for a bit – we had some chai, a few had something to eat and of course, there’s yet another pee story coming! But this time, it was a good old hut side where all of us girls just went under the beautiful blue sky! 😂

Our first Chai Tapri! (PC: Abhijeet Shinde)
The arrogant, yet cute!

We reached a nice warm chai tapri where we all sat and waited for some chai! It was a good spot for all of us to chat and get to know each other better! The groups I was hanging out with kept changing throughout the walk. We were accompanied by a cutie pie, but this one was a Raja type. Wasn’t very keen on meeting people as such, but with the ones he knew, he was all puppyish! He was gorgeous, with a big fat fluffy coat!

A very cozy Chai tapri!

15 minutes after the tea break came a HUGE white snow patch and all of us turned into 5 year olds! We got so excited that we started digging into the snow, started throwing it around and obviously started throwing snowballs at each other already! It was already looking like magic land and we weren’t very far away from our first campsite!

The sight of our first campsite was breathtaking!!! Hats off to India Hikes for pitching such a fabulous campsite! I hope the photograph does some justice to how beautiful the place actually was! We chose our tents and went in to freshen up a bit. Lunch as usual, was just out of the world.

Bekaltal Camp site (PC: Deep Thakker)

What I absolutely LOVED about this group was that we didn’t have ONE bad apple! Everyone was as excited as the other and with Deep in the picture, we were all willing to do whatever it took to just have some fun! Deep had fantastic activities planned that not only made us recall each other’s names, but also made it hilarious! Each one of us had to remember names in the sequence along with a dance move they did! Well, it sounds pretty easy now, but ask the last person who had to remember everyone’s names and dance moves!

Fun activities with Deep! (PC: Abhijeet Shinde)

We were greeted by yet another puffy little teddy bear – a Himalayan mountain dog! I loved that dog so much – she was jety black with a tinge of red and deep  reddish brown eyes. Super friendly and loved belly rubs, this one! My treks are definitely incomplete without the Himalayan dogs!

Another gorgeous fluff ball! (PC: Lianne)

We started exploring the place a bit more. Ankur, Piyush and me started walking up to the other side. Somehow with years of dog behavior work, my senses have definitely sharpened quite a lot! I thought I could FEEL and HEAR the rain coming down towards us. I told the boys to start moving towards the small tapri about 50 – 60 metres away, but no, they wanted to explore more! It took not more than 2 minutes before there was a BURST of rain out of nowhere and now we were sprinting to the chai tapri! It was the perfect ‘I told you so’ moment! 😂

There we were, with a few more from our group, sitting as close together as possible to warm each other up a bit! We thought it was just going to be some chai, but no – we had one of the most amazing sessions. Hiba and Piyush – the amazing poets – began their renditions of some heart warming poems and shayaris. Hiba’s poems took some time to understand, she wrote and recited them in pure Urdu. Unbelievably beautiful! Piyush on the other hand, knew some poetries on the back of his hand – Hindi poems just go through and through your soul! To make things even better – we saw hot jalebis being made in front of our eyes and we popped them within minutes! The tapriwala made fresh jalebis – we were all zoned out! I did a bit of entertaining myself too. I’m a vocalist – for the people who don’t know me yet. I did give a little bit of my performance too. It was a mini party in that cute little wooden tapri, an evening to remember.

We managed to them huddle up and sit for dinner and that is where Piyush started with his COLLECTION of stories! Anyone who has ever lived a hostel life knows how many stories you can remember! Piyush just had the best ones in store for us. We laughed, even rolled over laughing! It was then going to be a routine! One thing that was missing was a deck of UNO cards. Can you believe it? 20 if us and not one decided to carry UNO! But turns out, this group had too many interesting stories to share and not once did we think of playing anything else!

Day 3 – Bekatal to Tilandi (9,885 feet to 11,050 feet) – It only gets cooler, literally!

The frozen Bekaltal Lake

We left after breakfast the next morning and very quickly arrived at this gorgeous frozen lake! No, it wasn’t the Brahmatal Lake, it was the Bekaltal Lake. We had to change our route just a little bit because there was too much snow on the other trail. It was absolutely GORGEOUS! There was a thin layer of ice on top of the lake and snow all around it. We were also told that there are fish in this lake too. We weren’t allowed to go in or touch the lake of course, but the stories around the lake were very interesting!

Amidst all the madess!

Our trek guide – Deepak ji was a very experienced trekker who was mostly into bigger expeditions. He was an interesting person to speak to as well because he would tell me lots of mountaineering stories! I had planned to do my Basic Mountaineering Course in June 2020, which obviously got cancelled (courtesy – COVID), but at that time all i wanted to know was more and more about the course and the mountains!

We went through some mesmerizing patches of the snow forest, beautiful Rhododendron trees hidden under thick layers of snow. The trek wasn’t a very difficult one. Bekaltal to Tilandi was quicker than we imagined. After going through some beautiful scenic views and slipping through snow, we managed to get to yet another GORGEOUS campsite – Tilandi. It was on top of a peak, with absolutely nothing around, which only meant – CROSSWINDS! 😲 We reached before lunchtime and were hanging around a bit. The sights were almost breathtaking! It was surrounded by smaller peaks.

The Wonderland – Tilandi Top Campsite (PC: Deep Thakker)

The IH staff there were telling us about the last set of trekkers that came by and that they experienced a snow storm here the previous week! They said the cylinders were rolling off due to the strong forces of the wind! And how a few people had to hold hands and walk because they would slip otherwise! It sounded so exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time!

As we were walking around, we saw one of the most beautiful views on the other side. The sun hidden behind the clouds and a ray of light cracking through them on the peaks around. It was quite foggy too, so the light looked even more surreal! The pre and post lunch sessions were extremely entertaining because we had a storyteller in the house – Piyush! He is such an amazing story teller that you feel like you’re in the story visualising every moment in real time! Quickly after our lunch break and a series of stories by Piyush, we decided to step out again. Usually it’s not a very good idea to sleep in the day time on treks, it definitely cuts down your sleep at night and that’s definitely something you don’t want!

Are we in Paradise already? (PC: Deep Thakker)
Rock Buddies, indeed! (PC: Deep Thakker)

Piyush, Ankur and me went ahead to sit on a huge piece of rock that we could see from the campsite. We went there to get the best view of the sun setting, but it was too foggy to even locate the sun. We did get to see the different colors of the sky though, it was totally worth it! We sat there and talked for a very long time – it was one of those philosophical movie evenings – we just needed a background score! After that evening the 3 of us connected way too much and hence, now, we have a WhatsApp group – Rock buddies! It’s hilarious, but we just had to!

You only really know the value of the sun on snow treks like these! The minute the sunlight disappeared, the winds started gushing in and the temperatures stooped low! We were all back inside the dining tent, back with our funny stories and all the crazy games! I wanted the time to just freeze in that moment, those were really the best times!

Sunrise at Tilandi Top

We were told that we shouldn’t miss the sunrise because it is one of the most beautiful sunrises on this trek. The next morning we were all up and about, ready to catch the sunrise! We sat on one of the spots on the campsite and waited for the sun to start creeping in. It was already beginning to light up a little bit, like a dim light in a room. The chai was ready JUST in time and the sunlight started hitting one peak after the other. It hit the highest peak first and then slowly started lighting up the others! We were standing in front of one of the most marvelous mountains – Mt. Trishul and the gorgeous – Mt Nanda Ghunti. We could see these peaks from everywhere, but it was most visible this morning with the sky all clear and the sun blazing on these peaks.

Day 4: Tilandi to Jhandi Top to Brahmatal Top to Khorurai – THE LONGEST DAY!

My roomie, Sanidya & me -gearing up for the Summit!

We started very early that morning, our trek guide Deepak ji was getting quite agitated because we were a big group and we needed to cover way more than usual! We all got ready and put on the fancy snow crampons on our shoes and we were off! This trail was not as easy as the previous two that we had done, this was a bit challenging. It kept going higher and steeper with every turn we took. We were carrying our rucksacks with us of course, so we were getting tired very quickly. Deepak ji mentioned that if the chai tapriwala is there on the Jhandi top crossing, we may be able to leave our rucksacks there! After a point in time that’s all I was hoping for! Although my bag wasn’t all that heavy, I definitely preferred walking without the load!

Taking a break! (PC: Deep Thakkar)

Fortunately for us, it wasn’t snowing that day and the sky looked clear. The sun was peeking through the clouds and making the views even better! After taking some rough turns here and there, we were now walking on plain white snow blankets! We could see Jhandi Top from the other side, which was very motivating! Even though I was fit enough, at such a high altitude you do tend to get breathless and tire out way quicker than usual, obviously. Everyone was trying to motivate each other. And there Deep was – running up and down with all the energy he had! He was meeting everyone from top to bottom and I don’t know how he had the energy to walk through the rougher patches with so much ease! We started calling him a mountain goat – he really was like one!

Deep – The mountain goat! (PC: Naveen Kakati)
Slow & steady (PC: Naveen Kakati)
Jhandi Top! (PC: Deep Thakkar)

Jhandi Top was very close now, we could see the orange flag! Luckily for us, the tapriwala was there, which meant we could leave our rucksacks there (yay!). As soon as we reached Jhandi top, we were all super excited and the adrenaline was back up! We were standing in front of the marvellous Mt Nandadevi and Mt Trishul and an entire session of group photos began! Deep and Piyush managed to do some very impressive headstands and handstands!

I left my rucksack behind and carried my water bottle in a tiny bag, along with my trekking pole. As we started our ascend towards our summit, things got challenging very quickly! Now we were struggling a bit more with each step, but we were very motivated to get to the top before the weather started to go bad. One thing that you just cannot predict is the weather conditions on such high altitude treks. It’ll be bright and sunny for a minute and the next, you’ll be standing in a white out!

The final hour (PC: Deep Thakker)

The last one hour of the trek was of course, the most challenging! We had to cross a ridge-like path which was full of fresh snow. Fresh snow means it’s going to be very soft and it messes a lot with your balance. The higher we went, the steeper it got. The trekking poles are a boon in snow treks like these! Everytime we would think we’re closer, we would look up and realize – not yet! The weather wasn’t getting any better either. We couldn’t really locate the sun as such, it was starting to fog up a bit. It felt as though we were now racing against time because we kept thinking how much more we need to cover and we couldn’t afford the weather to kick our butts!

After what felt like forever, I was welcomed and wooed by a couple of the boys who had already made it to the summit a couple of minutes before me! I can NEVER describe the feeling, it’s too happy,  satisfying, freezing, but my face was so warm!

Brahmatal Summit!

There we were – 12,250 feet up high, completing our summit! The view from such a point is mesmerizing, it’s too surreal! You can see all the peaks possible around, covered in white! It’s exactly what paradise must look like! Everything was white with very little blacks and browns showing, which must be a few big boulders and a couple of trees. When the entire group reached the summit, we congratulated and hugged one another. Everyone was so emotional and so proud! We had summited Brahmatal Top!

We could see the frozen Brahmatal Lake and campsite far away, yellow tents completely under a blanket of snow. That was where we were supposed to camp instead of Tilandi – I’m very glad that we stayed at Tilandi though, it was too beautiful!

On our way back (PC: Deep Thakkar)

Almost 30 minutes after celebrating our summit, we started our descend. It was still a long way to go, we had to trek for another 3-4 hours to get to Khorurai! The descend definitely felt easier, but it takes such a toll on your knees! This was the fun bit too though because as you know by now, we were a mischievous group! We started throwing snowballs at everyone who was walking in front of us! Aiming to get to Deepak ji who was leading the group. We did start a bit of a snow fight, but we also had to move fast! We laughed, we slipped, we had snow in our jackets and now our hands were numb because of throwing all the snow around!

Finally we managed to reach back to Jhandi Top and uff, this was one of the BEST lunch of my life! Just some plain parathas with HOT chai with a view to die for! The tapriwala was also making some amazing egg omelets – I took a bite of it and I have never had a fluffier and softer omelets – EVER! This is what I don’t understand! He added just a little bit of salt and red chili powder, that’s it – but the omelet was out of this world! It’s just something about the food in the mountains!

Re-entering the Rhododeron forest

After a long and delicious lunch break, we were on our way. The views this time were even more beautiful than before, if that’s even possible! Gorgeous pink Rhododendron trees were back, the forest looked fuller this time and it wasn’t as white.

We reached a big white forest patch and we all knew – IT WAS TIME FOR A SNOW FIGHTTTTT!!!! Everyone dropped their bags and ran with heaps of snow in their hands to throw at one another! We automatically divided ourselves into groups and now we were aiming at individuals! We made sure we hit Deep quite a lot, just because he was running and hiding so much!

Sliding on ice, like a boss!

We would all just look at each other and know exactly who was going to be our next target! There was snow EVERYWHERE. On our heads, in our jackets, in our neck warmers, on our bags, on our faces – it was a snow war zone! After our snow war, it was time to SLIDE down, literally! We had been looking for a place where we could slide down for a long time and finally we found it! One by one all of us sat on our butts and slid down the slippery icy slope! What a rush!

Khorurai – into the woods!

This photo doesn’t do any justice!

We finally made a move towards our next campsite – Khorurai. You’d think we’d all be tired, but I guess the adrenaline kept us going for quite a lot of time. The group just became closer and closer every passing turn. We were all talking to one another a lot more, groups were mixing and changing, it felt like a big happy family. We took some beautiful turns, saw some paw prints which were either bear or fox, exciting and scary at the same time! The Uttarakhand forests are known for its beautiful, magnificent wild brown bears. There were stories floating around about how a couple of the staff members have some ‘bear stories’! As we took a turn down a slope, the sight of the bright yellow India Hike tents started to appear and we were all just so happy – we were going to eat again!

San & I!

We randomly selected our tents and my roomie, Sanidya and I instantly went into the tent, settled our bags and sat together with our feet outside the tent. What a feeling to just BE. It was so silent, everyone was slightly tired, now that we had reached the campsite, the adrenaline started to drop just a little bit. By the time all of us got out of our tents, we saw Greg – fresh as a daisy! He had just taken a quick SHOWER! It was freezing cold, but this amazing man somehow managed to quickly take a shower! I have absolutely NO IDEA HOW! We would think twice before even brushing our teeth and washing our faces in the mornings there!

The Khorurai campsite was deep IN the woods! We were surrounded by big green trees with snow sprinkled all over them. We could only hear the beautiful soft birds and the silence in the woods! We rested for about 15 minutes and everyone slowly started to gather outside again. It was chai time! The dining tent was quite spacious, yet so cozy! All of us huddled up together with our hot cups of tea waiting for snacks to come in!

This was going to be out last evening together as a group, so everyone was very happy to be there! It was time for some more stories, but this time, we had one of the most UNEXPECTED story tellers who swept us off our feet! Abhijeet a.k.a. Bhau (post this story telling session!) Abhijeet came across as one of the shy guys, but we were wrong and how! He told us a story about how his friend and him went on an unplanned trip to Manali with exactly ₹60/- in their pockets and their misadventure of a story! We were all rolling on the floor laughing our asses off by the end of the story! The twists and turns that story took, it would make an amazing movie – a blockbuster, no doubt! There wasn’t just one, but TWO interesting stories we heard from Abhijeet and we were blown away! Abhijeet’s story itself must have been around an hour long, if not more! After him, we weren’t sure what other stories would be of any interest at all! But don’t forget, we had the most amazing story tellers – Piyush, too! The session went on and on for hours and none of us had moved at all, it was already dinner time by now!

I was very keen on going and star gazing for sometime, but the campsite was too dense with the trees, which was beautiful in its own unique way, of course. After dinner we decided to finally go back to our tents and called it a night, our bodies were definitely tired, but oh, the excitement of being THERE, in that moment! Sanidya, Deep and me chilled for a while in our tent and finally tried to get some sleep. Even though I was so exhausted, I couldn’t sleep very well that night, I think the thought of it being the last night in this tent was bothering me a little.

…And back to base!

My tree!

We had breakfast and I said my goodbyes to this gorgeous campsite. We started descending towards Lohajung through more and more gorgeous trails! The snow had started disappearing bit by bit, leaving traces here and there. We halted at another very small chai tapri for just a bit, although the tapri was closed. As we were passing through the beautiful forest, Deep had planned out an activity for the group already! We came to an area which was a land full of trees. Each one of us had to select our tree and go have a conversation with it, just a secret that we didn’t want anyone else to know. I went over to my tree – it was a very big and very tall tree with beautiful tiny plants growing on its bark too – It was a furry tree, almost velvet like! There was pin drop silence, all I could hear is the winds softly gushing through the upper parts of the trees, some birds chirping, that’s about it. Deep asked us to hug our trees for a minute, and all of us did. A minute went by a little too quickly and none of us had the heart to part with our trees! I felt so safe in the arms of that tree, it felt like it was hugging me back. That connection was something I may have felt when I was a little girl, hugging a tree! It was surreal and I cannot thank Deep enough for this experience!

Resting together! (PC: Deep Thakkar)

As we kept going, the surrounding villages started to reappear. We could see the villages and their beautiful farmlands on one side and the great big snow peaked mountains on the other side. We reached the basecamp very quickly. We were back to the Lohajung base camp! We kept our bags around and scattered around the place. We had lunch and were now basking in the warm sun rays that we were blessed with on that day! A few of us put out a couple of mats outside in the sun and hung out. The sight was still so breathtaking – the snow peaked mountains were clearer because of the sunny weather, we could see the entire village.

IndiaHikes Basecamp, Lohajung (PC: Abhijeet Shinde)

After freshening up, a few of us decided to go for a stroll around the base camp around dinner time. We walked around quite a bit and it was so chilly and so beautiful at the same time! The nearby villages were lit up, but not too loud. And most of all, the stars! We could definitely see a BUNCH of them, but it could have been clearer. We were all chilling together almost all night, chatting, joking and playing games, I can’t even recall when we finally slept off, but it was LATE!

It’s always heartbreaking for me to say goodbye to the mountains, I feel a heaviness in my heart, but the thought of coming back lightens me right back up! As the jeep drove off, I kept looking for the last sight of a snow capped peak. This time I was in the car with my ‘rock buddies’! Piyush just has like a journal of some extremely entertaining stories! By now we knew every character in Piyush’s stories and what they were currently doing in their lives!

As adviced by the local breakfast dhabba

A couple of hours after leaving Lohajung, we stopped at a nearby dhabba for breakfast. Probably the BEST samosas I have EVER had in my life (yes, it beat Gurukripa too!). The dhabba guy was making fresh samosas and we couldn’t stop eating! Just as we drove past the beautiful mountains, River Ganga started accompanying us again! I get amused by the colors of this magnificent river every time I see it! It’s a very different kind of turquoise!

Halt at Karnaprayag

After 13-14 long hours, we finally reached Zostel, Rishikesh! Fortunately more than half of us had booked our stay at Zostel for that night! We were all so happy to be in nice cosy rooms with access to hot water! I immediately ran in for a hot bath. We got ready and left in search of a good place to eat. Rishikesh is a dry city, which means alcohol isn’t available just anywhere, although we did manage to find some! Rishikesh was REALLY cold as well!

The Zostel at Rishikesh has too many memories for me, fortunately, all really good ones! All of us huddled up at midnight and sat on the Zostel terrace, just chatting and joking and having the time of our lives! It finally got a bit too cold for us to sit up on the terrace, so we decided to go back to one of the rooms. Finally my adrenaline had dropped and I was exhausted out of my mind! I didn’t want to sleep, but my mind was battling so hard with my tired body! We finally decided to call it a night and I just snuggled into my blanket like a little kitten and passed out!

Sunset in Rishikesh

One thing I absolutely LOVED about this trek are the people I met. Everyone was such a sport! Each one was so enthusiastic about all the games we had to play, nobody created any issues, nobody was arrogant and everything just went on so smoothly. I definitely made some friends for a lifetime, the extrovert in me was at an all time high – this was one of the BEST groups ever!

Until next time… ❤

BURAN GHATI PASS – OCTOBER 2019

After a midlife crisis and a big, long break, my soulmate Kritika and I decided to take on a trek after almost a year and a half, but this time we wanted it to be in Himachal Pradesh. After a lot of back and forth, we decided on the beautiful – Buran Ghati Trek. It seemed like the perfect plan – go to Shimla – chill – trek – come back. Oh, there was way more that happened on this trek than that! 😃

After 6 months of moving to London, Kritika landed in her Mumbai apartment and 3 days later, she was on her way to Borivali station. I left my place, almost on time, but of course in a hurry, just like most Mumbaikars – like another very close friend Niveditha says – everyone in Mumbai is running to some place, and always late! 😄 Of course I got caught up in a really bad traffic jam, the train was going to depart at 4:35 p.m., and there I was stuck at every red light possible! It’s a very funny, scary and exhilarating experience to be RIGHT on time before you miss the train, isn’t it? I got into the train at Bandra Terminus, Kritika joined me at Borivali. My heart melted as soon as I saw her! All we did was hugged for a good 3-4 minutes and it was the biggest relief and the best hug I got in the last couple of months for sure! ❤️ Here began our next adventure…

It’s unbelievable how much two friends can chitter chatter, two girls to be precise! We talked NON STOP for at least 6 hours, and I’m not exaggerating! We have proof. A young boy who was sitting right across who eventually joined our conversation for a bit, told us to ‘shut up’ for just sometime, very sweetly and indirectly though! 😂 No, that didn’t stop us from talking more! We can talk rubbish for HOURS together, it’s magical!

Chit chatting, laughing, chilling and finally sleeping, we reached Delhi and visited Kritika’s ever welcoming sister, had lunch and rested there for a bit. By now my life had changed a LOT, my life choices, my lifestyle, everything! And everything happened just on time for me to be fit enough for this trek. I had started my low waste and plastic free journey and I was documenting a few things that we were doing here and there. We carried our cutlery, homemade snacks, homemade energy laddoos and everything we possibly could to save up on creating trash. We left from Delhi in a chair car to reach Kalka which was about 5-6 hours away. It was just about 10 p.m. when we reached Kalka, but it seemed like it was already around 2 a.m. there – the absolutely dark and silent streets creeped us out a little! We had booked a hotel right next to the station so it would be easier to get back there in the morning. We reached our hotel, which was decent enough for the night, BUT – we had to change rooms because the first one had bed bugs! The second room was also kind of special – it was DAMP! The bed was slightly damp, the carpets and even the blankets! It was a very funny experience and we weren’t going to change this room because it was very clean! We had dinner and quickly decided to call it a night – we had to catch the Shivalik Express Toy Train at 5:45 a.m.

Day 0 – A long longg longgg train ride… Kalka to Shimla

The next morning we were out and very much on time to get to the station. There it was -the cute little toy train! The journey began and it went on and on. And on and on. And on and on….for SIX HOURS!!! The journey was extremely exciting, at first, but by the end of 2 hours of beautiful scenic views, you tend to start wanting to zoom off to your final destination! The journey of course had its funny experiences, we met a couple of very funny people, but by the end of the journey it felt like we’ve been on that train forever!

Actually, the best time to take the toy train is in winters when the place is covered in snow, but nevertheless, it was a beautiful scenic journey that kept changing at every turn. After a LOT of pictures and of course, talks, we reached Shimla at 12 p.m.! It was the end of September – 28th to be precise, so the weather was really good – not too hot, not too cold and definitely no showers. Shimla is a very cool place – the streets are beautiful, filled with some very weirdly but sensibly connected streets, the streets were also connected by elevators, which was new to me.

We reached our hotel, rested, showered and finally left to have some lunch. We decided to take a walk around Shimla that day. We went to the famous Shimla Mall street which took us to the church street. Before we could reach church street, it started raining! We quickly ran and took shelter with a bunch of other people. You know, when you’re with your best friend, you can just talk with your eyes? That’s what we were doing and all hell broke loose when we burst into laughs amidst a crowd! We couldn’t stop laughing, we had no idea why we were even laughing that much! 😂 It was like we had to laugh because we hadn’t laughed like that in the whole of last year that we weren’t together! We had to get out of there and escape all the weird looks we were getting! We somehow managed to wander around a bit and decided to go back to our room and rest, we had our pick up in the morning at 6:30 a.m.

Day 1 – The adventure had almost begun!

As we left our hotel at 6 in the morning to reach the bus stop which was a good 20 minute walk, we realized that we were actually at the wrong end of the road. Some shit had to go down, right? We were lucky enough to get a cab that took us to the meeting point, which of course, was 5 minutes from our hotel! As soon as we reached, we threw our bags in the first jeep we saw, which didn’t belong to us, so that was embarrassing as well! Finally we met a couple of our trek mates and we met our equivalent of CRAZY – Monica! It was amazing how the three of us almost instantly connected so well, it felt like we’ve known her for a long time! We became the best of friends, and we were the only three girls in the group! We met our 4th traveler – Mr. Ashwani, a young 57 year old boy! The 4 of us took off in our jeep and we waved goodbye to who we thought were hopefully the rest of our group. It was, thankfully! 😋

Till we reached our first stop for breakfast, I thought I was going to throw the hell up! The roads were way too curvy from Shimla. After having some hot and delicious aloo paranthas and introducing ourselves to the other trekkers, we slept like babies in the car, or at least everyone else did! I usually can’t sleep much on drives. I was listening to some of my songs and humming along as usual. We reached our dingy lunch place which served some of the best food ever! I can still taste the mushroom masala on my tongue! *Slurp!*

I don’t know what it was, I don’t know whether it was the air, the company or just a feeling – as soon as the jeep turned left, the scene emerged to my right and instantly my eyes filled up, I had goosebumps. There they were – the mountains with clouds hugging them from all ends. The peaks could barely be seen, but that was the beauty of it all. I took it all in, the moment was too special. Then of course everything changed because that was THE BUMPIEST RIDE EVER! 😵 We saw so so so many apple orchids! Farms and farms one after the other, covered with green colored clothes in some parts to protect them from the birds and direct sunlight. We saw bags of apples being zip lined from one end of the mountain to the other, it was so much fun to watch! We were also offered some big, red juicy apples which we washed in the rain water through the car window and started chomping off!

The “broken bridge!”

After a 10 hour drive, we were finally there – to the “broken bridge” that was supposed to take us to our basecamp village! Our trek had already begun. We had to start descending across this extremely steep, metal bridge that had collapsed in a landslide. One by one, we started climbing down with tiny little baby steps. We did not expect it to rain at all, but of course when you’re in the mountains, you always have to be prepared. It was drizzling just enough for us to know what’s coming for us on this adventure! We met the rest of our gang – Sanketh, Harish, Lakshman (a.k.a Krishna post this trek), Deepak and Prasoon (who was the superman of our group and would always reach first every single time!)

Yep, we climbed down THIS ‘Broken Bridge’

On our way to the village, we broke the ice with the Bangalore guys. It was supposed to be an innocent and genuine question, which turned into a dirty and hilarious joke and we just burst out laughing! We trekked through the beautiful forest that finally led us to this cute and green little village – Janglik (9,200 feet). We must have trekked for about an hour to get to our guesthouse and all of us were already exhausted. It got us thinking about the days to come! We reached a gorgeous green and white coloured house, which was made of wood. It had the coziest rooms and a beautiful mountain view right across the window.

The Beautiful Trek The Himalayas’ Guest House

Our room was on the first floor and to get to the first floor, we had to climb up a small rock like structure and walk across a thin wooden plank – like I said, our adventures had already begun and were getting better at every step!

Our Cozy little room – Photo Credits: Kritika Jhunjhunwala

After somehow managing to cross the plank, we got to our rooms! We girls had a better room than the boys! 😁 It was TOO CUTE! We entered and saw 3 sleeping bags lined up for us. We freshened up a little bit and were called to the dining room next door. It had started to get really cold now! We were already shivering and layering up! The only thing that kept bumming us out was that it had started to really rain by now. Since it was just the 9 of us, we introduced ourselves very quickly and a delicious dinner was served along with the next day’s briefing! We slept quite early that night, praying to all the Gods that it stops raining the next day!

Day 2 – The big, huge and beautiful meadows! Janglik to Dayara Thatch (9,200 feet to 11,075 feet)

Janglik Village

We started our journey with an early cup of black tea with some yummy breakfast. We had to wear our raincoats and covers because the weather didn’t look very clear that morning. As we started walking through the village, we passed all the small houses made of mud, some made of wood, some even with bamboo. We had a beautiful brown dog accompany us the entire way as usual!

Very quickly we left the village behind and entered the most GORGEOUS meadows I had ever seen in my life! They were just huge open fields on the mountain, all green, covered in so many trees and everything looked even better because of the rain! It looked like everything was getting cleaner and clearer with every step we took. The meadows looked like they’re never going to end, they were humongous!

The Tea Hut

Half way through, we came across a cute little hut that was serving hot tea and maggi! And there it was – our first pee break! 😂 The three of us found a big big rock and in the forest and the wilderness, we relieved our souls! I’m telling you, you get closer with every pee break together, it is true! (I’m laughing so much while writing these pee stories, I’m going to go have to go pee!)

After about 4 hours we reached our campsite, which wasn’t set up because the rains had made everything slower than ever. We huddled up and sat in the dining tent that was already put up. As soon as we sat down, our bodies started cooling down and in no time it was SO DAMN COLD! Our fingertips felt almost numb! We were hungry, tired and super cold! As soon as the tents were ready, we took our bags and ran into the tents. The best thing about these treks are the cozy tents that keep you warm and snug. We just didn’t want to leave our tents, but then of course – we had to pee! 😂

Dayara Thatch Campsite

We all were called for lunch in our favorite dining tent, I absolutely loved the dining tent because it was such a pretty color – a nice light ice blue. Something about that color was very very peaceful.

The crazies!

Along with Trek The Himalayas, we also had the India Hikes group which was moving almost with us on most of our campsites.  We went over to say hi to them as well! The weather definitely got a bit better and we were just wandering around the place a little bit. We got back to our dining tent to start playing games!!! UNO is always the ice breaker, isn’t it? Especially if you have extremely competitive people playing and then there is cheating and way too much fun!!! UNO, Buzz!, Dumb Charades and 21 Questions, these were our saviors! We would play for hours at a stretch without knowing or caring about the time, without overthinking about things, without having to look at our phones – THAT is what I absolutely LOVED!

Slippity – slip – slip! :’D

As we went into our tents, we had arranged ourselves such that I was in the center, Kritika was on my right and Monica on my left. We got into our sleeping bags and as usual, a little bit of chitter chatter had to happen. We slowly drifted off to sleep. When I woke up very early in the morning, around 4:30 – 5 a.m, I could feel my rucksack at my feet, which was very weird because it was placed between Kritika and the tent, I thought maybe it fell over Kritika, or something, I couldn’t join the dots! So I woke up, put my red torch on, only to find Kritika sleeping horizontally under Monica and me. This little girl had slipped below us in her sleep because our tents were on a slope! I couldn’t stop laughing! 😂 This happened EVERY single night after this because all our campsites were slightly slopey! Kritika had another story to tell, she freaked out in the middle of the night because she couldn’t feel me on her left and thought we probably left her and went off, only to realize she had actually just slipped under us!

Day 3 – “Mehhh” – The pleasant surprise! – Dayara Thatch to Litham Campsite (11,075 feet11,737 feet)

Our morning began with us peeping out to a very dull sky, cloudy and no sunshine whatsoever. We got ready and got out of our tents, ready for breakfast and still hoping it doesn’t start raining too much! No sooner did we finish our breakfast, than the sunlight started cracking through the clouds and in no time, the entire bugyal LIT UP! We were so happy! We had to go back and finish packing so we could start on time. Kritika and I were sitting inside the tent, just chit chatting, tying up our shoelaces when ALL of a sudden, this girl dove into the tent, grabbed her camera and RAN out like the tent was about to explode! I was sitting there in a state of confusion and looked at her, she said, “get the hell out – LOOK!” I lifted the tent cover up – THOUSANDS of sheep were hoping and trotting over the entire bugyal in front of us! My jaw dropped and I rushed out too! Black, blue, grey, white, black and white – it looked like small cotton puffs had fallen from the sky covering the entire place up! It was the PERFECT start to the day! We went and greeted the sheep, although they didn’t want to come too close, we tried our luck. 😁

A walk through the LOTR and GoT feel forests:

We were finally set to start our trek for the day, we were so happy now that the sun was out, we didn’t have to wear our raincoats and covers. Nope, we were very very wrong! We were just about 200-300 metres away and the sun was gone. Instantly, it started to drizzle! It was very funny, but also it was going to be another damp day! 😋

This was by far THE MOST BEAUTIFUL trail EVER!!! The forest could literally have been used by the production of Game of Thrones or Lord of The Rings for a shoot – it’s exactly what you imagine it is! Trees and roots of trees creeping in from all the directions, green and mossy, dark and magical. I wish I had clicked a few photos, but my phone had died.

We had to climb and walk through the roots of these trees, with rain water passing underneath them. Creepers hugging the trees, dark moss all over really fat trunks of trees, it was gorgeous! The rain only made it more and more beautiful! We had to cross this beautiful river too, a very narrow and shallow stream though, we just had to be careful not to slip, Just a few metres before we could reach our campsite, there was this patch which was very prone to landslides. Once we reached the starting point of that patch, all of us gathered and were briefed to walk really quickly and look for ‘rocks that would fall!’We had to take a deep breath and just START, we just walked through that patch so quickly and didn’t dare to look behind! It was a very exhilarating experience!

The Litham campsite was just about 3 hours away, it wasn’t a very tiring walk that day. We reached the campsite and was it mind blowing or what! We were put up right next to a beautiful river that was gushing its way down from Chandranahan Lake. We were surrounded by huge mountains which were decorated by small icings of snow. When we reached, the toilet tents weren’t up yet and it didn’t even look like they’d be up very soon. The campsite was pretty flattish with barely any stones to cover us up, so we took an umbrella along with us this time and that’s about it! 😂

A beautiful mountain dog who was just super duper friendly! Photo credits: Kritika Jhunjhunwala

As soon as we reached the campsite, it started to rain a little more, so we had to be packed in our tents for a while which was great because we got all warmed up! After resting for a bit, we decided, we should carry a small bag in which we can keep all the things we may require the entire day! This was to avoid getting out of the common dining tent at all, it was too damn cold outside! We started playing games after games, of course that day there was a LOT of dumb charades and so many funny movies, we also included some series to make it funnier! Buzz! was our thing, we could play Buzz! non stop! Around 4 p.m., one of us must have just opened the cover of the tent and there it was – BRIGHT sunlight and a clear sky, clearer that ever! All of us got out of the tent to wander around a bit, also we started drying all of our stuff – the shoes, the covers, the bags, the socks, it looked like a ‘dhobi ghat!’ The sun was so bright and shiny we had to actually start layering down a bit! It was the best we had felt in the last couple of days and it was such a good break from all the rain and the soaking wet feeling all the time. We played a LOT of dumb charades out in the sun! We were also accompanied by a beautiful, gorgeous black mountain dog who I of course was in LOVE with! ❤️ After we saw the sun go down, we knew it was time to run back inside because the weather would go from 0-100 in seconds! 😋

Tent-mates! Photo Credits: Lakshman

After some warm and yummy dinner, it was time to step out again. Now, when I write ‘jaw dropping beautiful’ – I MEAN EVERY WORD! I have never ever seen a sky so wide, dark and FULL of stars! Can you imagine looking at the Milky Way with your naked eyes? Well, we didn’t have to imagine, because there it was. It was so damn cold that we all huddled up like goats and sheep and all we did was shiver and stare at the dazzling sky! The stars were so bright that we could actually see the light shining on the snow capped mountains around us, we could see silhouettes of the mountains in front of us. Lakshman and Kritika were busy trying to figure out how they could capture the sky in the most perfect way, and they did! It was the most amazing night on the trek till now! Oh, and not to forget, the temperatures were definitely going to drop below zero degrees that night, it must have already been 1-2°C when we were star gazing! ❤️

Day 4 – The toughie! – Chandranahan Lake (13,900 feet) and back to Lithum (11,737 feet)

We woke up, of course with Kritika at our feet again, but our tents were FROZEN! Yes, our tents were actually frozen, the temperatures dropped below zero that night and all of the things that we had kept in the balcony of our tents froze too! From our shoes to socks to scarves, everything. It was extremely exciting to be very honest! We were at this trek in the beginning of October. Which meant rappelling was definitely not happening, forget snow, we weren’t really expecting it to be as cold as it was getting as well.

Chandranahan Lake, Photo Credits: Kritika Jhunjhunwala

Today was our acclimatisation day. We had to trek all the way from 11,737 feet to Chandranahan Lake at 13,900 feet and back to our Litham campsite. It was going to be a tough day, so we had to start early! Fortunately for us, the sun was up and about that day! All our things were laid outside in the sun again till we finished our tea and breakfast. We quickly got dressed and started our ascend. By this time Kritika was slightly uneasy and unwell from the previous night for some odd reason. Maybe it was just a little bit of stress, the altitude as well as the slightly sleepless nights. We started climbing up with our guide Bhisham Ji. He was ONE jolly person! We had such good conversations, from training dogs to how things worked in his village. He was telling me how they train their dogs to herd sheep, it was absolutely amazing! As we kept climbing up, the trail got tougher and tougher.

River Pabbar along with the beautiful snow capped peaks, Photo Credits: Kritika Jhunjhunwala

Like I always wonder, how people just connect and become so close in just a couple of days on a trek. The boys were really sweet to have waited for us so much and always looking out for everyone, especially Sanketh and Lakshman. It’s beautiful to watch how everyone starts caring so much for one another.

Now came the really tough part of this climb – there was an extremely steep area which was almost just rocks that we had to climb, it wasn’t really a slope as such, but more like straight climbs. That’s where we all started to really lose all our energy. Somehow with a few breaks here and there, we managed to get to the top of that peak, we were welcomed with a beautiful work of art – just some round pebbles on top of each other which looked absolutely amazing! On the other side we saw SNOW capped mountains! We didn’t expect to see snow at all on this trek, but we could already see so many peaks covered in snow! The river that we saw gushing at our campsite was River Pabbar which was flowing from Chandranahan Lake. We were just a couple of minutes away from the lake. The lake was very shallow, but it was so clear that we could see the pebbles and stones even at the bottom of the lake. We sat there and rested for a while, ate our energy laddoos and had a lot of water! Once we were a bit better, the photo shoot started! We could see the river flowing on our right and beautiful snow peaks in front of us, it was just perfect!

We had to leave early because the weather had started to change a bit, we could see a few clouds gathering and we hoped with all our heart that the sun stays put! We started descending, which was also quite a task because the first part was really really steep!

We managed to get back to our campsite by around 1:30 – 2 p.m., which was very impressive according to me! As soon as we got into our tents, the sun was out and there the clouds were back. We had just one or two umbrellas that actually belonged to the TTH staff, they were really sweet to share them with us! We were back in our favorite dining tent and the games went on and on and on…

Day 5 – Up we go, to somewhere we really don’t know! – Litham Campsite to Dhunda Campsite (11,737 feet to 13,373 feet)

The beautiful valley, Photo Credits: Lakshman

We woke up to a nice bright and shiny day! This trail was very different though, it had way too many rocks!  The rocks were like a maze which just went on and on for quite some time. But as we walked ahead and looked behind us, we saw the beautiful valley that looked absolutely stunning! We crossed over a river again, but this time, we had to be careful enough not to slip or get our shoes wet, or it would be very difficult for the next day’s summit! As we were walking, out of nowhere we saw 3 majestically beautiful horses grazing and running about. I felt like we were in some Disney movie at that particular moment! I mean, wild horses?! Who on earth expected that!

As we climbed, and climbed…. And kept climbing… we would reach a spot and think – ‘this may just be it!’, we would see people just going on and on!  Every time we would reach a point, we would see Monica, Prasoon and Ashwani going further up! It felt like we’re on a never ending climb that day! It was a very steep and exhausting climb, very similar to the Chandranahan Lake. Fortunately, Lakshman, Sanket, Harish and Deepak were accompanying us throughout! In just a little time, we started seeing those snow capped mountains getting closer, the winds were getting chillier and the views – better! When we finally got to the last bit of the climb, we could see the tents pitched in, we could see SNOW in the mountains above! There it was – the summit point! We could see the Buran Pass from our campsite – it was just too damn exciting!

You think we would be extremely exhausted right? We literally settled in for 10 minutes, went in for lunch and were fresh as daisies! While the extremely enthusiastic Monica, Sanketh and Lakshman went for a slightly further trek, the rest of us just wanted to stay at the campsite and hang out. Harish, Kritika and me went and sat on these rocks at the edge of our campsite – the beautiful sugar coated mountains were right in front of us. We sat there for a long long time, till the time the cold really started to get to us.

Deepak, Harish, Kritika and me went and sat in our tent and as usual, continued our game of UNO. We also started a new game of 21 Questions and it was absolutely FANTASTIC! When the trio returned from their little adventure, it was photo session time again! We had so much fun clicking so many funny photos and again, it was only the tiny little hailstones that sent us back into the dining tent where we continued playing a couple of more games of 21 Questions!

The next day was summit day! We had to have dinner by about 6:30 p.m. and get into our sleeping bags by 8. The plan was to wake up around 3 in the morning and make a move by 4:30 am. We didn’t waste too much time, finished dinner and went back into our tents. Of course we were talking through our tents to each other, which was so much fun too!

Photo Credits: Kritika Jhunjhunwala – who set up the camera to run and come into that position (with a missing glove)

It’s so quiet in the mountains that you can hear your neighbours even if they’re just whispering! After trying for about 1-1.5 hours, we finally drifted off to sleep, only to wake up to a LOUD thunder at around 2 am which literally shook me out of my sleeping bag! I opened my eyes and saw the tent lighting up for a split second and then the sky rumbled! This went on for a while, till I forced myself to go back to sleep.

Day 6 – WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?

With the alarms buzzing in our tents, we instantly woke up because the excitement and adrenaline was too damn high. We could hear the rain droplets on our tents, but that’s okay right, we had been trekking in the rain since the beginning. We opened the tent cover and there it was – SNOW! At least a foot and a half of it right outside our tent! Turns out we had been hit with a crazy snow storm all night long, and those weren’t raindrops, it was snow! We were excited and disappointed at the same time! Such a rush of mixed emotions, so much confusion, we didn’t know what was happening. Just then our trek leader – Joshlin, came by with hot cups of tea to our tent to tell us that we might have to wait till the weather clears out a bit and he asked us to go back to sleep and rest for some more time.

It was snowing outside, it was freezing inside and all of us were up! We were just chit chatting for some more time, but finally decided to get some more sleep, might as well, we didn’t know what the journey was going to be like that day. We woke up again at around 6 a.m., it was still a little dark outside, there was absolutely no trace of the sun. We finally got out of our tents. We had been in the tents for almost 10 hours now!

The shock we got in the morning

Every spot that was visible last evening was covered in snow, literally EVERY thing! The light slowly started creeping in and we started looking at the trail we were supposed to take to get to Buran Pass – we couldn’t see a thing! There was a complete white out! We couldn’t even locate a single mountain up there, forget locating just the pass. Our tents were covered in snow, it looked beautiful though. We had to wait for things to clear out just a little bit more, so we did the best that we could – SNOW FIGHT!!! There was so much snow everywhere that we couldn’t not have a snow fight! Then there was also the snowman that Lakshman started working on. The snow just didn’t seem to stop, it kept on snowing and it only got worse. Finally it was decided that we wouldn’t be going ahead with the summit, It was absolutely heartbreaking and disappointing, but I guess it might have been the right call to take. 💔

The never ending journey began….! Dhunda Campsite to Janglik Basecamp (13,737 feet to 9,200 feet)

Now, since we weren’t going to go up, we had to descend all the way down, not just to the Litham campsite, but all the way down to our basecamp village – Janglik! That’s descending from 13,737 feet to 9,200 feet – it was going to be a LONG LONG day!

The entire group

We started descending at around 8 a.m. The snow kept coming at us, fortunately it wasn’t windy, but it got extremely slippery! Since there was fresh snow everywhere, we were all just tripping and slipping into the ground, it was hilarious to watch! Somehow we came all the way down from the first mountain to cross the river and get to the other side, only this time, the rocks on the river were also extremely slippery. One of our trekkers tried to go past and instantly slipped and fell into the river! It’s the worst feeling in the world to have wet clothes while trekking in such cold weather conditions, especially wet socks and shoes. 😣 There was no way we would be taking that chance, so it was decided that everyone is going to take their socks and shoes OFF, make a chain and walk THROUGH the river! We quickly had to start taking out shoes and socks off and was it cold or what! We started, one by one, dipping our feet in the ICE COLD water, I kid you not, it felt like my feet were on FIRE! One by one we started moving quickly through knee deep water and somehow managed to reach the other side. We sat there for about 5 minutes just so that our feet would come back to normal, they were whiter than ever! What an ‘electrifying’ experience it was! 🥶

Frozen!

We proceeded and got to the rocky part of our trek, remember I had mentioned the rock maze? It looked like someone had roasted giant marshmallows and arranged them all over the place! The entire valley looked like a scene out of a ‘Disney Frozen’ movie. The river was very much by our side all the way till we reached Litham. We walked past our Litham campsite as well and it was still snowing, although the snowflakes were getting a bit smaller in size. As we walked, I could see that the water that was still on the ground had frozen into very thin layers of ice on the ground while the snowflakes were still landing on them and melting off almost instantly.❄️Every path that we previously took to get to the Dhunda campsite looked very different now! It felt like we had never been here before, everything looked new, the trails, the paths, the views – everything!

Slowly as we descended, the snowflakes turned into tiny little hailstones. We were trying to collect them in our hands to see them better, they were so tiny and cute! By the time we reached back to the mysterious GoT and LOTR looking forest, the hailstones had turned to raindrops. We walked non stop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and finally took a lunch break. It was exhausting, but I guess the adrenaline just kept us going. The forest was so magical, the streams of water had become slightly heavier too after so much snow and rain. We could hear tiny little waterfalls everywhere. The air was so clean, I could feel it! The rain does clean everything out! We sat in the middle of this beautiful forest, under a big tree which was protecting us from the rain. We had vegetable pulao, it just felt so good to eat in that damn cold. The only thing I didn’t like was that we had to remove our gloves, which made my fingers freeze!

Bhisham Ji in marshmallow land!

After fueling ourselves with food, we took off, but this time we had another plan in mind! Monica, Kritika and me started humming songs at first which then turned out to be a full fledged concert! 🤩 We sang and walked all the way and if not for the singing and a bit of shimmy, the descent wouldn’t have been half as good as it was! We were getting song requests from everyone as well, it was so funny! We sang everything from retro bollywood to the 90’s pops and of course, there were a few punjabi hits as well! 🎶 We stopped at the same little hut for some hot tea on our way back, rested there for about 10 minutes and left. We were told to walk as fast as we could because once the sun went down and the light was out, it would be extremely difficult and risky to trek. We went as fast as we could, but of course we weren’t fast enough to beat the light. All of us took our head torches on. The last few hours were slightly difficult, not because of the trail, but because we had been walking for over 9 hours now! The fun bit was that everyone was still happy, chirpy and motivating and the singing didn’t stop! We moved to some phone music too. Now my knees and thighs had begun to hurt a little too, but we couldn’t stop, we could see the village lit up from a distance which motivated us to move faster. There were points which were very steep, valley on the left and mountain on the right, every time we would reach difficult spots, we would shout out to one another warning the people walking behind to be careful. Trekking in a group really brings people together, its amazing to watch your empathetic side come out like that!

We finally entered the village, but still had at least 25 – 30 more minutes to reach our guesthouse. Those last 30 minute felt like hours! We were just walking, fast and mechanically now. The guesthouse was also located at a small height, so to get to the guesthouse we had to climb up a little, that was tough!!! As soon as we reached the guesthouse, all of us just sat down on the floor and didn’t move for at least the next 15 minutes! We had trekked for about 12-12.5 hours!!! That’s the maximum amount of time I’ve been on my feet. We went to our rooms, freshened up a little and met back in the dining room. Dinner never felt better, especially when we had gulab jamuns for dessert!

Everyone was so damn tired, but we still wanted to be together for some more time. We decided to meet in the girls’ room because it was cozier and a couple of guys wanted to rest. Another game was introduced – ELLEN’S HEADS UP! We must have laughed our bottoms off, rolling all around the room! There is a category in Head Up! where you have to act the words out and we had words like – Sunbathing, where Lakshman just lied down and expected us to guess what it was! Can you imagine what the other funny words must have been like! We laughed way too much that night and finally our bodies started begging us to go to sleep!

Day 7 – It’s not over, yet – Janglik to Shimla:

We woke up all sore the next morning, of course. We had to change back into our damp clothes because hey, did you forget, we had to descend all the way down to the pick up point which was another 1 – 1.5 hours away? After breakfast and tea, we started our journey towards the broken bridge. It wasn’t as bad as we expected it to be, maybe because it was a descent or our bodies were just getting used to the extra activity! We met a few people who stayed in the village too, really old grandmothers bringing their grandkids back from school. They were so charming and sweet, they looked happy and content with everything! It was nice to encounter such happy people, it just brought a big smile to my face! We finally reached the broken bridge which we were dreading, but fortunately for us, they had built a road joining the two sides! We crossed the river and this time the car arrangements had been altered, Kritika, Monica and I sat with Sanket, Lakshman and Harish.

The toughest bit for me in these journeys is leaving the mountains. I was staring out of the window till I could see the last glimpse of the peaks, it always breaks my heart, but motivates me to come back very soon. I already had plans ready in my head!

The beautiful city of Shimla

We were the crazy six now! We had a blast on our drive, we played Buzz! (of course), listened to all kinds of music from Hindi to English, to Kanada, Tamil and Telugu too and danced on our seats! The driver of our jeep was as enthusiastic as us, we definitely kept him entertained as well. We saw the apple orchids again, only this time, our driver got us a BUNCH of apples for the way – at least a dozen of them! We kept munching on the apples and dancing and singing the entire way, till we reached Shimla. It was about a 9 hour drive, but the weekend made it very difficult to enter Shimla, we were stuck in traffic for about an hour or two, but we finally reached our drop point. We were back to civilization, but Shimla is in the mountains too, it was shining like the stars had fallen down on the ground. We took our bags and made a move to the same hotel we had booked for another night. We all stayed together that night as well, we hung out on the streets of Shimla, which were so beautiful and peaceful late at night. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends – like I always think, I’ve made the nicest friends on my journeys and I hope I continue to do so. 💛

I was slightly disappointed of course, that we couldn’t summit Buran Pass, but everything happens for a reason, maybe I will come back, you never know, I might just come rappelling down this time too!

Until next time …❤️

The Magical Winter Kuari Pass Trek (2017)

Back to the beginning:

This goes back to my first ever Himalayan Trek – the winter Kuari Pass in December 2017!

The journey began with me taking an early morning flight to Delhi, then a 6-7 hour road journey in a very comfortable Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate to finally reach Rishikesh. I was supposed to meet my best friend Kritika at Zostel Rishikesh, who is responsible for all of the stories you’re going to read. I must have reached Rishikesh bus station at around 8pm, took a rickshaw to Zostel and voila! There she was waiting at Zostel for me! 🙂 Kritika has travelled way more than I have, she’s a Shillong girl! She has always spoken to me about her beautiful travel adventures and finally convinced me to do this trek. I will never be able to thank her enough!!! It was also her birthday the very next day, so we were going to bring in her birthday that night.

Zostel in Rishikesh is so full of life all the time, we just didn’t want to leave. We ended up meeting a bunch of interesting people there and we all started playing Pictionary and Jenga! We had such an eventful evening after which we moved to the other hotel we had booked nearby because Zostel was already booked out. We went to our room, had a nice hot shower and of course, talked A LOT! We were waiting to cut Kritika’s birthday cake and celebrated a bit and called it a night.

Day 1: Rishikesh to Joshimath

The next morning we packed our bags and headed back to Zostel, where our Trek The Himalayas team’s jeep picked us up. We were a total of 7,including the driver. Mauna and Shyam were from Bangalore, Saikat (Raja) and Asish (Ladda) were from Kolkata and Kritika and me. It was just the perfect group! Mauna and Shyam were very experienced trekkers and travellers and told us their adventurous stories. On the other hand, Raja and Ladda were slightly quite for most of the journey…. till they opened up and I can’t even begin to tell you how many times we fell out of our seats laughing!

We stopped for breakfast at one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL places I had seen. It was just a random place on the side of the road. But the other side – the calm yet powerful river accompanied us and the sand on its sides was white! The place was extremely quiet which made the scenery even better because all you could hear, smell and see was the gorgeous turquoise blue river! After hogging on a couple of yummy aloo parathas, we were on our way. All of us bonded over the music we played – the old 90’s English, the 2000s and of course Euphoria’s Maaeri magic – everything was perfect!

After a 10 hour long zig zagging, yet the most scenic ride we finally reached our basecamp – Joshimath (6,724 feet). It was freezing at around 7pm – definitely single digit temperatures! We were allotted rooms and we quickly went and hid under the heavy blankets to warm up a bit. We were called down for introductions where we met 11 more very interesting people – we were a total of 17 trekkers! We all got to know each other a bit over some nice hot dinner and instantly made some good friends!

Day 2: Joshimath to Gulling Top – Up & Up! (6,724 feet to 9,600 feet)

The next day we woke up early to report for breakfast after which Kritika and I had to go and buy gloves, a pair of sunglasses and a torch! We were surprised to see that quite a few local shops had opened up at 7:30 – 8 in the morning! We were back in our jeeps which dropped us off to the starting point of our trek. We reached there at about 9am, off loaded our backpacks and started our walk. We had our day packs with us – 2L of water, some snacks, some warm clothes and other basic supplies. The weather surprisingly got quite hot! We had to peel a few layers down and most of us were trekking in just tees and basic track pants. The first part of this trek was slightly challenging because of the weather mainly, but also we had to cover quite a lot of distance that day. We were walking through some extremely beautiful trails and we could see some snow capped mountains around us too. We had to cover about 6km, which sounds like a piece of cake, but the elevation was from 6,724 feet to 9,600 feet – about 2,786 feet! We had a fantastic group of people, we all joked and laughed, raced and rested and of course there were so many photo enthusiasts! We filled our bottles with the natural streams that ran alongside. We also went to a very old and dingy wooden cabinet – it was a toilet of course! 😜

We crossed the beautiful villages – Tugasi and Gulling to reach our first campsite – Gulling Top (9,600 feet). It was a huge land with a stunning view on all sides! We started helping in pitching the tents – my first ever tent experience! This trek was also very special because it was called the ‘Green Trail Trek’ which meant that we were going to clear up the rubbish other idiots had left behind in these beautiful mountains. After resting for a bit, we started the clean up around Gulling Top! Unfortunately we did manage to collect wrappers, papers and other trash which made me so upset. After the clean up, we went further up to watch the beautiful sunset, we couldn’t see the sun set as such, but we saw the beautiful orange light fall on the white mountain ranges around and slowly disappear. No sooner did the sun go down, the temperature dropped so low that we had to rush back and layer up!

Day 3: Gulling Top to Tali Forest Camp – where the magic began! (9,600 feet to 11,070 feet)

The next day we woke up at about 6 AM, it was still dark outside and then all of a sudden in about 30 minutes it was a bright day! And now – my first POOP experience was about to begin! It was not uncomfortable AT ALL! The one thing people usually get psyched about is the toilet conditions. Fortunately for me, I’m not fussy about this at all. In fact I enjoyed taking a dump in nature! 😛 There is a fantastic toilet tent, it’s not really in the open as such, very convenient!

We had some amazing breakfast and hot tea, packed our tents and started. We had now begun to enter the snow zones! There were sprinkles of sugary snow everywhere around us and it kept growing thicker and thicker. We were headed to our next camp site – Tali Forest Camp (11,070 feet). One of my favorite things about this trail was of course the dog who started accompanying us! She was such a chilled out and super friendly dog, these mountain dogs are just as magical as the mountains themselves!. We went through a jaw droppingly beautiful forest covered in snow!

The trees, the creepers climbing the trees, the smaller plants growing on barks of trees. Everything looked like a scene out of a foresty movie! There were a couple of big trees that probably fell because of a snow storm a few nights ago, which only made the forest look more dramatic. We rested on these beautiful points and had so much fun clicking funny photos and playing around in the snow a little bit. It was just fantastic! This climb wasn’t as difficult as the previous day. It was quite chilled out in fact.

Kritika had some fancy ass shoes! These shoes were leather, had no grip whatsoever and she thought she could use them for just another trek – clearly not! The entire climb from where the snow started to form, all Mohit and I were doing is trying to make Kritika walk without slipping and breaking her sweet little tushy into pieces! All thanks to the shoes, Mohit and her did hit it off quite a bit! I hope they’ve saved those shoes! 😜

We reached Tali Forest Camp and this was the most beautiful place I’d ever seen! It was in a ditch, surrounded by snow and trees. It wasn’t snowing at the time, but there was a LOT of snow! The entire forest was covered with snow – fresh and old.

Next stop – Tali Top!

We rested for a bit in our tents, had some hot lunch and were off for an acclimatization walk to Tali Top. Somehow we managed to trek for another 45 minutes with Kritika’s fancy shoes, only to come to a gorgeous Tali Top. It had a frozen lake! For me that was it – I had never seen a frozen lake ever before! Kritika and I were too excited and went all the way to the edge of the lake.

The lake was frozen, but not complete hard ice. We looked at each other and instantly decided to walk over the harder edge of the lake, two happy puppies that we were! We were so happy to be standing on a frozen lake, till we looked down and saw a crack form! Within a few seconds we screamed and jumped out of the lake and the ice broke, literally! We couldn’t stop laughing and we were rolling on the ground laughing at each other and this stupid idea of walking on the lake! Kritika now had not just fancy gripless shoes, but also one of them was wet!

By now Kritika, Mohit, Vaibhav, Niraj and I had become a fantastic group. We enjoyed each other’s company quite a lot. We all got back to the campsite and straight into the dining tent where we started UNO! Even Raja, Ladda, Indrayan, Mauna and Shyam joined in and our UNO shenanigans began! We cheated, laughed, ‘caught’ and had the best time of our lives! We actually ended up playing for hours together! That evening we were briefed about the plan for the next day – the summit day! When they briefed us about this, I really thought to myself – “Why, oh why, did I listen to Kritika and come for this trek!” We were going to leave at 5 AM to start with, we had to trek for 11 hours, yep – ELEVEN! We were briefed and then we were given our snow spikes to attach to our shoes – these were grippers to walk through the ice and snow.

We went back into our tents, a little nervous, a little tense about the summit day. We made our sleeping arrangements and as we were headed to the amazing toilet tents, which by the way, were located at least 250 metres from our campsite, Niraj came by and scared us about this big black wild dog that pounced on him near the toilet tents! Now, because I am a dog behaviorist, I know the consequences and the impact of a wild dog attack! We still had to go pee before we got into our sleeping bags! It was PITCH dark. I stood outside the tent while Kritika went in and I was so nervous thinking today MAY just be the day to get bitten by a dog in this beautiful forest! Fortunately we didn’t encounter the dog at all and made our way back – slipping and falling (fancy shoes, remember?) It was FREEZING cold that night, the temperatures were well below zero degrees! I’m assuming at least about -6 to -8°C. It was quite difficult to get much sleep because the ice cold ground wasn’t making it very easy, it was uneven as well. We struggled a bit that night to catch up on some sleep because we didn’t have too much time. We had to wake up around 3:45 – 4 AM to start our climb at 5.

Day 4 – The Big Day! (11,070 feet to 12,763 feet)

We woke up to the dogs barking at around 3:30 – 3:45 AM, but of course didn’t get any more sleep after that. Everyone got ready and started packing for the big day. We had to go to Kuari Pass and come back to Tali Forest Camp – approximately a 15KM trek! We got out of our tents for breakfast and tea and THERE he was – The “black wild dog!” My heart melted. He was just the MOST ADORABLE DOG ever! He was young and super playful, that’s about it! He jumped at Niraj to get to his toilet roll thinking it was food! I was in love!

After a good healthy breakfast we started off. It was still dark, just about 5:30am, the sun hadn’t woken up yet! The spikes were extremely helpful, especially for fancy-shoes-Kritika. We started walking through some dense snow and hard ice, trying not to slip and fall throughout. It was going to be a really long day. The entire group was trying to move as fast as we could. This climb was the toughest of all the days, the ascent was quite steep too. We had to climb rocks and be extremely careful where we put our spikes. The spikes of course were very slippery through the rocky areas. We would climb a little bit and think of resting for sometime, but here’s the thing – the more breaks you take, the harder it is to restart because your body cools down very quickly! It was difficult not to rest, but it was even tougher to start climbing after we rested! There were huge rocks that we had to slide through because the spikes would keep slipping, we would just start sliding our bottoms through these areas.

I didn’t bring a pair of windcheater pants, so I bought one from the local Rishikesh market. In a snow trek you have to wear windcheaters so that the snow doesn’t seep into your clothes and make them wet. These bloody pants were the highlight of my summit day! They tore within an hour of use! Yes, THEY TORE! It looked like I was trekking in a torn skirt! It kept tearing more and more with every step I took, it was hilarious!

We saw the beautiful sun rise from behind the peaks, touching each peak as it rose up. In no time it was BRIGHT and we had to wear our snow goggles to protect our corneas from burning out! The snow is so damn white that the sunlight reflecting from it is unbearably bright, if not for the snow goggles you can suffer from snow blindness – it is a temporary condition where you actually go blind for a while because your cornea gets damaged by the bright reflection of the sun.

We went through huge patches of land filled with soft, knee deep snow. We reached a few points where you could see more Himalayan peaks covered in snow. Everything just looked like big pieces of marshmallows! Some peaks that were much shorter looked like big pieces of black forest cake with soft sugar sprinkled on them. The views were to die for, mesmerizing at each stop.

The last 1 hour of the climb was by far the most difficult for me, it was way too steep and the snow didn’t help at all. On the sides of this patch were small water streams where we got to refill our bottles. Kritika and I walked together for most of the trek and then it got very difficult for us to stay together. At times she would take over and the other times I did. Mohit and Kritika stuck to each other though, I think this is where the story actually began! 😉

I managed to somehow reach the bottom of the final climb, but I felt like I had no energy left at all. After 7 hours of ups and downs, this felt almost imposible! This is when I started cursing Kritika for bringing me all the way here! I struggled and struggled my way through and somehow made it to the top. There it was, I had finally made it to the top, my FIRST ever summit – Kuari Pass (12,763 feet). The highest point I have ever been to in my life – LITERALLY! I reached the big rock everyone had occupied, I was just so quite the entire time, mostly because I was super exhausted. I somehow managed to climb the big rock and just sat back for a while not being able to figure out what had just happened. As my breathing slowed down, my heart stopped racing so fast, I looked around. I’m out of words right now as I write, but let me try. I felt like I was on TOP of the world! The mountains spoke to me, the winds whispered in my ears – but it was all so silent. Only big white peaks all around us, everything was covered in so much snow that it felt like I was in a different world altogether. I can’t express the feeling to be very honest, it was just something I have NEVER experienced in my life.

When the entire group was together, we all congratulated each other and celebrated in our little ways. All of a sudden, our trek leader Abhishek surprised us with some hot tea that he brought along! The feeling of HOT tea touching your lips, going through your system in that weather and settling is just – WOW! Then there were the photographs of the summit with the banners and this and that. We all sat and enjoyed our packed dry lunch and had to quickly start the descent. In the mountains you can never say when the weather changes. The weather can suddenly go from good to bad in minutes! We were told to start the descent very soon.

The descent feels like it’s easy of course, but after a while, it starts taking a toll on your thigh muscles and knee joints! We reached all the same points much faster and waited also for more time than usual. We were around 7-8 women in the group. We realized we hadn’t relieved ourselves in the last 8-9 hours and decided, time to take a pee break! We sent  all the men ahead and huddled up like sheep around each other and squatted! It was the funniest pee experience ever, I have never peed in the open, and definitely not with so many people around! It was hilarious because I JUST couldn’t pee! Social anxiety happened! Pee stories are the funniest! 😂

The way back seemed like it was going on forever and ever, till we finally saw our basecamp at a distance and cheered and voood! Everyone instantly got into their tents, but surprisingly no one was exhausted! I thought maybe people will want to just rest and call it a day, but no! Everyone was up and running. It was UNBELIEVABLE that the TTH Team served us with hot samosas and tea! Samosas!?? We lost our minds!

The trek leaders and staff started playing volleyball and I just HAD to join them! We played for an hour easy and that definitely got me warmed up! We all gathered in the gaming zone again – our dining tent! The games went on for way too long this time – UNO is like the best game EVER!! We were served some hot dinner, after which of course we continued playing Uno and then came the briefing for the next day. By now we were all so exhausted to even thinking about another day’s trek, but there it was – we had to cover about 8 more kms! Somehow we digested the fact and headed towards our tents. The night was extremely cold and funnily – there were 2 extra sleeping bags in the dining tent which were not going to be used, Kritika and me took those and that night, we slept like babies!

Day 5 – The Snow Slides and Fights!

We were woken up really early again, this time around I just didn’t want to get out because I was so comfortable and cosy! We had breakfast and started off. We went through Tali Top again and came across some more snowy patches. There was one area which was super freaky though where we had to walk on the edge of the mountain and the other side was just a very steep valley.

My heart was racing all through this patch! Somehow we got through and then reached the beautiful meadows of Gurson Bugyal. It was like wonderland! There was a beautiful place which had a slope going down into other meadows. Mohit decided to stunt it out there and he successfully managed to ‘create’ a slide like path and slid all the way down! Of course we all had to follow and it was SO MUCH FUN! Then began the snow battles and we started taking each other down! Our aim was to hit on the neck so that the snow seeped in! Yes, we were very cool like that! 😂 I had the MOST fun snow battling with Niraj, Vaibhav, Indrayan, Raja and Ladda! We just couldn’t stop even for a couple of minutes! Who knew hitting people with snow balls could be that much fun! This was also the time when we saw a beautiful love story begin – Kritika and Mohit were on a trip of their own! Niraj and me were only bitching about how they’ve left us behind and laughing about it. We ended up reaching Auli, which was FULL of snow! Auli is actually known for its snow adventure sports, so you can imagine how much snow we got! In fact when we got there, it started snowing too! We quickly got some Maggie to eat and had to rush to the ropeway that was going to take us back to Joshimath. The ropeway was gorgeous, but I could see leaving the peaks behind and it was kind of a sinking feeling, but also I was so happy to have made such good friends and memories!

Back to Base: Joshimath Basecamp – open window at zero degrees!

The trek hadn’t ended yet, we had another night to ourselves! We got to our rooms, took the quickest and nicest shower and assembled for the debriefing session. We had a fantastic time at the debriefing, got our certificates and headed back to our rooms. That night the boys managed to arrange for some rum! 20 people, 1 room and rum – can you imagine what all went down that night! We laughed so hard that we had to open the windows to get some air and it was zero degrees Celsius outside!!! We laughed at things I can’t even think or talk about on this blog! We must have ended up sleeping at around 4-5 in the morning! What a memorable night that was!

The next day we had to leave and it was so heartbreaking to say goodbye to the entire group which had almost become one big crazy family. Met so many interesting people, made some crazy friends and definitely took back some fantastic memories! This was the story of my first trek ever and I should have started writing back then, but hey, it’s never too late because all of this refreshed my memories so much and made me laugh and smile throughout! Totally worth it!

These Himalayan mountains are a magical place. But you’ll only know the feeling when you’re there, breathing in and out, feeling the vibe. Within 4 days a love story began, bloomed and Niraj and I take the credit for it because today my best friend Kritika and that boy from Mumbai – Mohit, got married! What could be a better story to tell right? ♥

Until the next time, mountains have already called and will keep calling me back!

My First Post!

How my journey began…

I started my journey to the mountains in 2013 in Kasol, Himachal Pradesh, but the REAL journey only began in 2017! It was a decision we made overnight that I needed to go experience exactly what it was to be in the mountains! I was not very convinced with the idea, but I just HAD to go and experience it. ‘What was so special about the mountains?’ I kept thinking to myself and only now, I know.

All the credit to my craziness and love for the mountains goes to my soulmate, my best friend – Kritika 🙂 There are absolutely no words to express how lucky I am to have this girl in my life! 2020 is going to be my year – a year full of adventures in the mountains. Hope you enjoy my journey too! ❤

About me!

Hello! I am Varuna Kaur, a Mumbaikar with her heart and soul in the mountains! I’m a Certified Dog Behaviorist and Trainer by profession, so yes, my days usually go better than anyone else reading this post 🙂 I’m also a zero to low waster which means I try to be as sustainable in life as possible, trying to live as simple as possible by using less. Lesser the trash created, lesser stress on the landfills and in turn, lesser stress for the planet! 🙂

I actually started travelling in 2013 with one of my closest friends Dinaz – we went to Kasol, Himachal Pradesh and spent an amazing week there. But that wasn’t it, I was inspired and encouraged by my partner in crime, my soulmate – Kritika! She started by taking me to Mcleodganj first, then Dharamsala and then the journey just went on and on, well its going to last a lifetime with this one! My first ever trek was to Kuari Pass in 2017 with Trek The Himlayas. I took to the mountains like a Labrador Retriever takes to the lake!

My idea of a vacation may be slightly different from quite a few. I’d rather go for another trek into the mountains than chill anywhere else in the world! I have a LIST of treks that I want to cover this year and I can’t wait to get started already!

I started writing about my adventures just for myself so I could relive them whenever I wished to, but then I guess its just a better feeling to share it with everyone! 2020 is going to be my year full of adventures. I’ve been planning this for a long time now and everything is finally falling into place! I can’t wait to get started on my blog too! Hope you can enjoy my adventures through this blog and definitely take ONE trip into the mountains – but let me just warn you, you can’t do it just once! ❤
